Sidechain that breathes (not pumps by default)
Attack, release, and multiband ducking in FL Studio: sidechain as a musical choice.
Pumping is a genre feature, not a law
EDM and some pop want obvious ducking. Singer-songwriter, ambient, and orchestral beds often need transparent space instead. Decide the aesthetic before you dial extreme ratios.
Attack and release shape the groove
Fast attack clamps transients; slower attack lets the kick poke through before the bass yields. Release defines how quickly the bass recovers, too short sounds nervous; too long swallows the next hit. Loop one bar and adjust until the pocket feels human.
When to go multiband
Full-band ducking can hollow the midrange of a pad or bass. Multiband ducking limits the dip to the frequency region that actually collides with the kick. Use it when EQ alone cannot separate two elements that must coexist.
Sidechain without a kick
A muted ghost kick or a volume-shaping tool on the bass can clear space rhythmically even when the drum loop is sparse. The listener feels pulse, not necessarily “compression working.”
