The pattern lab: how to iterate without chaos
Duplicate patterns, label variations, and freeze decisions in FL Studio when deadlines loom.
Why the pattern list becomes a graveyard
Every “quick try” spawns a new pattern. Without names, you scroll instead of compose. The lab mindset: each pattern is an experiment with a hypothesis written in the title.
Duplicate, don’t destroy
When an idea forks, double-time hats versus half-time, duplicate the pattern and suffix the name (Hats A, Hats A double). The old version stays one click away when the client prefers the first vibe.
Freeze as a commitment device
Heavy instruments get frozen when the part is approved. MIDI stays editable on a hidden duplicate if you fear regret. The playlist stays light; CPU stops punishing creativity.
Template starter
Save a blank project with color conventions, empty bus returns for reverb and delay, and one reference track slot. Open it instead of “empty + panic.” Your future self will recognize the layout instantly.
